Finger/Thumb Habits Help

By marking or placing stickers on the specific days, the below listed charts will assist you in helping your child to be motivated to brush their teeth or remember not to place their fingers in their mouth.  If you have another daily reminder you would like for your child, print out the blank chart and fill in the title.  The charts will help your young ones enjoy taking care of their teeth.

For a printer friendly version of each chart, click the title or picture below.

Finger/Thumb Habits

  1. If your child has a blanket, stuffed animal or item that they hold while sucking on their finger or thumb, it is important that this be removed.  It can be replaced by a gift that is not soft, cuddly or similar to the object being removed.

  2. Get a calendar, either from our web site (above) or they can pick out one of their own, i.e., Barbie, Blues Clues, etc..  Place this in a highly visible place so that the child can view his/her progress.  Please buy some stickers or star to go on the calendar.  Each day your child does not suck his/her thumb or finger, have the child place a sticker on the calendar.

  3. Decide on a prize or an activity that you will reward your child with if he/she quits the habit for 45 days in a row.  Write this on a piece of paper or cut out a picture of this prize and place it by the calendar as a reminder.  If your child should forget one day, they must start their 45 days over.

  4. If your child needs a little more help, we suggest making hand puppets out of tube socks.  Purchase a pair (or two) of men's socks.  Let your child decorate the socks with paint, ribbons, buttons or markers.  have your child wear the puppet when he or she is more prone to have their fingers in their mouth.  One pair may need to kept in bed and maybe another in the family room.

  5. Have your child call our office and leave their full name and phone number, so we may send them a prize as well.  You may also have them send us a copy of their calendar, if you choose.

  6. Above all, be positive and encouraging at all times.
